Chapter 10
âHere you go. Hot raspberry tea with a little lemon.â Cas set the cup of tea in front of Juniper.
The woman blinked, her eyes appearing enormous behind the thick glasses. âThank you, dear.â Her smile was subdued, and she couldnât hide the tremble in her hand as it reached for the cup. She fisted it, leaving the tea untouched for the moment. Juniper must have thought better of slopping hot liquid on herself with shaking hands. Smiling at Cas again, she tried to look brave. âWell, that was a bit of a to-do, wasnât it?â
Cas sat across the desk from the editor and thought about how she moonlighted as a Blossom Greeter. In fact, Juniper had been the first person Cas met in the witchy world. Sheâd been the exuberant witch whoâd shown up on her stoop to congratulate Cas for blossoming into her powers. Juniper loved greeting new witches and making sure their families had all the information they needed to help their young witch through the change.
The Crystal Springs Gazette was a small paper operation serving a mid-sized town. Juniper served as reporter and editor. The office itself occupied two levels in a storefront location on Morgana Avenue.
Cas liked Juniper. The eccentric woman was one of the people in her new world who Cas considered a friend.
It was obvious the floating corpse with Juniperâs face had rattled the newspaper editor. Cas could understand that, having seen a similar sight in her own driveway. She spoke in a gentle voice. âThe peacekeepers are all doneâthey took the body with them. Of course, it was only a clay golem.â
Juniper nodded, red curls bouncing around her face. âYes, yes. No worries. Someoneâs obviously enjoying an elaborate Halloween prank, just like you said.â
Cas exchanged a glance with Graham, who frowned. Cas wasnât sure if it was because he didnât think the golem was a prank or if he was thinking about their fight.
âThe golem was pretty creepy, thatâs for sure.â Todd, Juniperâs assistant, leaned on the doorjamb behind Cas. He was in his early twenties and had the eagerness of a new puppy. âIf it is a prank, itâs a really mean one.â
Cas glanced at the man. âYouâre right about that.â She turned back toward Juniper. âDo you have any enemies who might do something mean like this to you?â
Juniper finally decided to brave the teacup, managing to raise it to her mouth, take a sip, and put it down without spilling. She shook her head. âI guess I have as many people around who dislike me as anyone else does. But I canât think of anyone whoâd hate me enough to threaten my life.â She got a faraway look on her face and seemed to give it more thought. âIâve run into stories over the years, you know. Things people didnât want coming out.â
Her eyes narrowed and she pounded a fist on the desk, finally causing raspberry tea to splash over the side of the cup. Her tone was sharp. âI only report facts.
